25 years later, Wallingford hair salon still 'clipping' away

SEATTLE - When Becky Bjorback opened her child-centric hair salon inside a Seattle children's clothing store she committed herself to six-months. Little did she know she would be celebrating her 25th year in the business next month.

"I was 26, 27 years old when I opened the salon," she said. "Thinking now, here I am at 52 and running a business for this long, I never would have thought about that."

Bjorback originally opened Li'l Klippers in 1988 on 65th and Roosevelt. She was there for 10 years before moving her salon inside the Wallingford Center where she's been ever since.

It was then when she decided to expand her services beyond just young children, a decision she said was driven by the needs of her customers.

"I didn't want to lose clients that have been a part of our lives for so long," she said. "So we decided to open The Edge for tweens and teens. Then after 2-3 years of being in Wallingford we had so many parents who also wanted haircuts we decided to do a full-fledged family salon."

Come March the salon will highlight its success with an anniversary bash, but the small business owner admits the 25 year journey hasn't always been easy.

"We did see a downturn in business a few years ago when everyone else did too," she said. "But we keep plugging along and evolving, perfecting our skills and changing."

Bjorback credits her success in an increasingly competitive market to her loyal customer base and her commitment to a 100 percent hair cut guarantee. And despite losing past employees as new hair salons open she says the team she has now is definitely a 'cut' above the rest.

"It's about finding the right people and my staff is fabulous."

Li'l Klippers will host its 25th anniversary party on Saturday, March 2. Bjorback plans to donate all of the proceeds from a raffle during the party to the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club.

Li’l Klippers Puts on its Party Hat and Thanks Community for Continued Support With a Birthday Celebration, Festivities for Children and Families! Li'l Klippers, Seattle's original kids hair salon since 1988, invites the neighborhood to join in celebrating its 25th birthday on Saturday March 2nd.

This celebration recognizes devoted clients and the dream they helped to make possible! As the first of its kind, Li'l Klippers opened its doors in March of 1988 in Roosevelt Square on 65th and Roosevelt inside Me n Moms; 25 years later Li'l Klippers still has the honor of serving 3 generations of clients from its beginning in 1988, along with welcoming new clients and friends every day!

Since Li'l Klippers has opened, stylists have developed long lasting relationships with clients, watching them grow from first haircuts to prom hair, and even wedding up do’s. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that 25 years later I would still have Li’l Klippers. Watching our staff grow and evolve is an amazing experience. The connections I have made over the years with my clients have been some of the most fulfilling of my life. I truly feel blessed to be in a profession that I still love” says owner, Rebecca Bjorback.

Li'l Klippers was inspired by two mothers looking to fill a void in the services offered to parents. Jacki Copacino and Debi Preston, consignment store owners, sisters-in-law and clients of Rebecca Bjorback, had a revolutionary vision for a kid's boutique with an in store salon that catered specifically to children. Becky took their advice and used her passion for hair cutting to create Li'l Klippers, a hair salon 'specially for kids. ! !

Since then the vision for Li'l Klippers has evolved. As Li'l Klippers loyal and adored clients continued to grow, the salon realized it needed to expand as well! In October 1997 Li'l Klippers moved to the Wallingford Center, adding a complementary salon "the edge hair salon", which caters to tweens, teens and adults.

The welcoming and patient stylists enjoy working with kids of all ages. The salon has handcrafted wood chairs shaped like animals & vehicles for children to sit in, with toy bins and books to keep them occupied and happy. It's a fun, bright and comfortable environment for parents and children to enjoy.

Li’l Klippers has been awarded Seattle Magazine's Best Kids salon in Seattle for many years in a row and have been nominated for Nickelodeon Parents' Pick Awards for Best Hair Salon in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 they were a King 5 Best of Western WA finalist for best Children's Salon.

This exciting day will feature cupcakes from Trophy Cupcakes, Li'l Klippers balloons, complimentary nail painting, face painting, amazing deals on some of Li’l Klippers favorite products and a raffle with various prizes, along with other festivities. One lucky raffle winner will win a year of haircuts at the original price from 25 years ago and another will win a basket of Bumble and Bumble hair products! In the spirit of Li’l Klippers’s commitment to support the community's youth, all proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club.

Li’l Klippers is a small business success story a testament to the innovation of women to create a business where they saw a need and the support of the community it serves. Li'l Klippers mission is to provide value and personalized service without compromising quality. Through advanced training and continued education Li'l Klippers have created a balance of skill and knowledge to achieve consistency, attention to detail, and the ability to create modern designs.
